Frequently asked questions

How does the word counter count words?

A word is any run of characters between spaces that contains at least one letter or number, so “don’t” and “e-mail” count as one word and a lone dash does not count. Each Chinese or Japanese character counts as one word because those languages do not use spaces.

Does the character count include spaces?

Both are shown: Characters includes spaces and line breaks, and Characters (no spaces) excludes them. Emoji and accented letters count as a single character each, matching what you see on screen.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and speaking time 150 words per minute, common averages for adult silent reading and presentations. Technical text or slow speakers will take longer.

Is my text saved anywhere?

Only in your own browser: a draft is kept in local storage so a refresh does not lose your work. Click Clear to remove it. The text is never sent to a server.
