Frequently asked questions
Does this converter handle daylight saving time?
Yes. Offsets are calculated for the date you pick using the IANA time zone rules in your browser, so summer and winter times are both correct.
Why pick cities instead of abbreviations like CST?
Abbreviations are ambiguous: CST can mean US Central, China or Cuba Standard Time, and BST can mean British Summer Time or Bangladesh Standard Time. City-based zones are unambiguous.
What happens to times that do not exist because of DST?
When clocks spring forward, an hour is skipped. The tool tells you and shows the equivalent time after the change. During the repeated hour in autumn, it shows the first occurrence.
What is the difference between UTC and GMT?
For everyday use they are the same time. UTC is the atomic time standard; GMT is the time zone used in the UK in winter.
